Marek Kopelent (born in Prague, on April 28, 1932) completed his secondary education at Prague's French lyceum in 1950, and went on to study composition in the class of Jaroslav Ridky at the Academy of Music and Drama in Prague (1951-55). From 1956-1971, he was contemporary music editor at the then State Publishing Company for Fiction, Music and Art, and at Supraphon. He was forced out of his post there during a political purge campaign, and saw his compositional output suppressed in this country.
Subsequently, from 1976, he had a job as corepetiteur at the dance department of the Elementary Art School in Radotin. In 1991, Marek Kopelent became a professor of composition at the Prague Academy of Music and Drama, as well as serving briefly (1991-92)
as music expert for the Office of the President of the Republic. His distinguished artistic, educational and public career earned him the Czech Ministry of Culture Award in 2003, apart from which he received Germany's Herder Prize for his contribution to the development of European cultural heritage (2001), and in 1991 the French government honoured him with the title of Chevalier des arts et des lettres. Kopelent's major works include the spatial oratorio Lux mirandae sanctitatis in tribute to Saint Agnes of Bohemia; the vocal-orchestral Legend of Saint Adalbert; the oratorio Messaggio delle bonta marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Don Bosco; the so far unperformed oratorio Ona skutecne jest... (She Is, Indeed...) to the verse of Vladimir Holan; and an extensive body of chamber works, notably vocal. He is currently writing a book of memoirs reflecting on his life path and commenting on the Czech music scene.
