First perfected by Mozart, the ‘classic’ serenade spread its wings with Dvořák, although it had to be discreetly toned down to gain the approval of royal salons. Village fete music and bandstand concerts mingle with waltzes and minuets. Cheerful, yet far from frivolous, the music challenges Dante’s claim that paradise cannot be described. A tribute to Sir Neville Marriner (1924–2016) and to the Czech approach to wind instruments.
