The most significant of his instrumental works are 6 trio sonatas ZWV 181 for two oboes, bassoon and basso continuo. These sonatas, typical of the period, are fourmovement sonatas known as "da chiesa" and comprise one of the highpoints of Zelenka's contrapuntal art. He broke with the traditional conception of the trio sonata by enhancing the role of the bassoon, giving it an independent melodic voice instead of using it to merely accompany. This a greater demand was placed upon the virtuosity of the interpreter.
