Oh, Johnny, Johnny, you smell like cloves.." Is the beginning of one song from the series of songs about John. If you like the sound of all varieties of the old Hebrew name Jan (John) as I do, you have chosen the right CD. After the multimedia project of "Songs From Painter Palette" (2000), Dulcimer band DANAJ is introducing this CD ABOUT John, FROM John and FOR John. John / Johnny - is the most popular and frequently used boy's name in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. This name has been passed down in many families from father to son for many generations. If you open any songbook, you will find out that John's name is present in every second or third song of the book. Songs ABOUT John from different parts of Moravia, Moravian-Slovakian borderland as well as the Hungarian side are presented by Magdalena Muckova, Lenka Gajdova, Pavel Mucka, and a small choir of women from Lipov. Our "Johns" are performing too - both Gajdas - father and son, Jan Mucka and also our music producer Jan Rokyta. And now if you are wondering, which Johns did our band "Danaj" devote this CD to, it is mostly to those who are not with us any more; such as Straznice band leader Jan Horny who was the first one in Straznice to play the march "Banovce" or the excellent singer Jan Misa from Sudomerice, whose soft tenor voice of "On Petrov's Fields.." is still resonating in our ears to these days. These "Johns", who performed on this CD, are Johns who are celebrating their birthdays - Jan Mucka, is going to turn 70 in August and our band leader and singer Jan Gajda, just had his 35th birthday. Deep in my heart I hope that these songs will be special, and warm the hearts of all of you who enjoy the sound of the nice folklore songs... so smell them!!!
