The hymn book "Slaviček Rájský" (The Nightingale of Paradise) was published by a priest, Jan Jozeff Božan, in the parish of Chroustovice near Chrudim. In a way, the hymn book is unique because it is printed on A4 paper. The only other hymn book ever printed on A4 paper was the "Capella Regia Musicalis" (1693 to 1694) by Hollan. "Slavíček Rájský" is mainly interesting for its contents as it was the only hymn book in Bohemia containing no less than 830 songs. A hymn book in the Baroque era had a completely different meaning than contemporary church song books. A choirmaster usually had a song book, containing general bass marks, put on organ. Another song book was placed at music-stand for singers and musicians. The song book has a typical arrangement: songs for Advent, Christmas, Eucharist, Lent, etc. Each liturgical period is followed with meditation which fully substitutes for sermons. Similarly as many other priests, Jan Jozzef Božan did not have enough money to publish the song book. However, fortune smiled upon Božan when he received an offer from count František Antonín Špork that he would pay for the publishing of the hymn book for him. However, the count made this gesture in order to regain his reputation; he needed to redeem his position in the eyes of the Church, because he had financed the publishing of morally offensive printed materials. Mr. Tybély, the printer from Hradec Králové, printed 12.000 copies of the hymn book; most of them were distributed across the parish. As the hymn book contains 830 songs, we were forced to select only a limited number of them for recording this CD. As a result, we chose 19 songs and arranged them into a kind of a "musical calendar". Wherever this recording will end up, we believe that it will not only please its listeners but it will also give them some idea of the genre which, unfortunately, is neglected by all of us - the songs of the Czech Baroque hymn books. This kind of music is rather different from that we are used to. It is typical for these songs they only give an indication of how to get to that point: nowhere is it strictly written, ordered or mentioned that they should be played slowly or using specific instruments, etc. It means that we can perform them in various ways. I would like to thank Michael Pospíšil, my good friend and musicologist, for sharing his knowledge, the facts and information available to us about the Slaviček Rájský hymn book with me. And why is our CD's name Vivat Tempora? As it means "Long Live the Times" - those good, Baroque times!
Dovolili jsme si některé písně transponovat do nižších tónin. (To by nám u Bacha asi neprošlo.)
V překladu to znamená "ať žijí časy!" - ty staré dobré barokní! Vít Janata (kapelník)
