The little known organist, music teacher, composer and poet Johann Christoph Kridel was born into a draper's family in the north Bohemian town of Rumburk. The births register lists him as Kriedell but he himself used the spelling Kridel. He acquired a grounding in music at the local Latin school from Moritz Schneider, school master and for forty-four years the church organist. Approximately in 1685-1690 Kridel studied music at a Jesuit college in Prague's Lesser Town (Malá Strana). Kridelś teaching career began at a Jesuit grammar school in Jičín but soon he returned to Prague, finding employment there as an assistant teacher and also organist in one of the many large Catholic churches. The Prague milieu was certainly a decisive factor in the gifted young musician's development. In 1694, when 22, Kridel left Prague for Rumburk and replaced his erstwhile teacher Schneider as organist in the Church of St Bartholomew.
