Vitezslav Novak (1870-1949) is slowly becoming better known in this country thanks to the continuing attention paid to him by Supraphon. Many collectors are initially suspicious of him because he lived through half of the 20th Century, but the important date in connection with Novak is 1870, which places his roots squarely in the romantic era. He was a student of Antonin Dvorak. He may have come from financially poor roots, but his talents made him almost immediately effective. The works here were all written by 1900. The Bagatelles, Serenades, and Barcarolles are charming but sinewy little works. At Dusk resulted from a strenuous trip he took in 1896 to eastern Moravia with a friend. This introduced him to the folk music of the area, which emerges in this composition. The Sonata Eroica of 1900 contains a vast array of expressive worlds. It combines monumental heroism with great lyricism. Martin Vojtisek performs magnificently. He plays with a wide range of thundering and quiet emotions. He studied with Ilona Stepanova-Kurzova, who knew Novak first hand and experienced a number of his premieres. Supraphon offers excellent sound and very fine notes. This is a wonderful release that introduces much worthwhile music. By Carl Bauman
