The work is a tragic opera in three acts to a Czech libretto by Otakar Hostinský after Friedrich Schiller; Fibich composed it between 1882 and 1883 and it premiered at the National Theatre in Prague on 28 March 1884. The score is often described as Fibich’s most Wagnerian and, despite mixed initial reception, is regarded by many scholars as the composer’s masterpiece for its dramatic scope and austere tragic tone.
Notable musical characteristics: the opera blends declamatory, speech-like vocal writing with continuous musical flow influenced by Wagnerian principles; the chorus functions both as commentator and active participant; recurring fate motifs and the funeral march from Act III are among the score’s most striking elements.
This release presents the Prague Radio studio recording conducted by František Jílek (recorded 3-22 November 1975) with the Prague National Theatre Chorus and Orchestra; the stereo studio recording runs approx. 135:47 and is issued as a 2-CD set in a slipcase with a 148-page booklet containing parallel-text librettos, multilingual liner notes (English, German, French, Czech), artists’ biographies and the full Czech libretto with parallel translations.
