In the quarter-century of its existence (1950-1976) the Vlach quartet succeeded in writing a significant new chapter in the history of modern Czech quartet playing. Under the leadership of Josef Vlach the quartet proceeded from its masterful victory at the international competition in Liege (1955) to take its place among the top chamber ensembles of the world, performing for audiences in Europe, America, Australia and Japan. Supraphon now expands its archive series with the last quartets of the romantic composers Tchaikovsky and Dvořák, pieces which were part of the Vlach Quartet's core repertoire.
The recordings, like the pieces themselves, are timeless.
