Herold Quartet (Petr Zdvihal, Jan Valta, Karel Untermuller, David Havelík)
The four-part free quartet cycle Lifetime presents Luboš Sluka’s chamber music across different stages of his life. Each quartet carries a specific expressive intention and reflects personal and artistic experiences of the composer. The individual works bear the titles Love, Friendship, Life Journey and Saying Goodbye. The introductory quartet Love was composed in 1976–1977, the second quartet Friendship in 1986, the third Life Journey between 1992–2003, and the final Saying Goodbye in 2003. Sluka emphasizes that each quartet may be performed independently with its own subtitle. Miniatures from 1956 represent his first quartet composition and were premiered by the Dvořák Quartet. The recording was made live in the Bohuslav Martinů Hall in Prague in December 2012.
