Birds in Black is one of the most distinctive early recordings of the Czech jazz trio that brought together the pianistic energy and swing sensibility of Najponk, the solid and melodically inventive bass playing of Robert Balzar, and the dynamically flexible drumming of Martin Šulc. The album was recorded in two sessions — most of the material in 1994, with two final tracks added in 1997 — capturing the trio’s development and gradual maturation at a time when their characteristic sound was taking shape.
The repertoire combines jazz standards with one original composition (Ginette by Robert Balzar). Najponk’s piano draws on the hard-bop tradition while adding his unmistakable drive and spontaneity. Balzar’s bass provides both structural grounding and melodic depth, while Šulc’s drumming keeps the music in a natural, club-like flow. Birds in Black představuje jednu z nejvýraznějších raných nahrávek českého jazzového tria, které spojilo pianistickou energii a swingový cit Najponka, pevný a melodicky invenční kontrabas Roberta Balzara a dynamicky pružnou hru Martina Šulce. Album vznikalo ve dvou časových obdobích – většina materiálu byla zaznamenána v roce 1994, dvě závěrečné skladby pak v roce 1997 – a díky tomu zachycuje vývoj i postupné vyzrávání tria v období, kdy se formoval jeho charakteristický zvuk.
Repertoár tvoří směs jazzových standardů a jedné autorské kompozice (Ginette od Roberta Balzara). Najponkův klavír se zde opírá o tradici hard bopu, ale zároveň přináší osobitý drive a spontánnost, která je pro jeho styl typická.
