Music of Prague Palaces and Gardens 1620 offers a vivid glimpse into the musical world that resonated in the aristocratic residences and gardens of early-seventeenth-century Prague. Although the repertoire is entirely Italian, it reflects the tastes of the Bohemian nobility of the time, who cultivated close cultural ties with Italy. Many of the featured composers—such as Bettini, Brunelli, Caccini, Capel, Fornaci, Marinoni, Muti, Negri and Foggia—are today almost forgotten, yet their music reveals remarkable craftsmanship and expressive richness. The collection includes both vocal monodies, a new and fashionable genre around 1600, and instrumental pieces preserved thanks to dance treatises and courtly manuscripts of the period.
The ensemble Ad Vocem brings this repertoire to life with historically informed performance on period instruments. The album presents a colourful sequence of canzonettas, arias, madrigals and dance pieces, ranging from tender love laments to lively balletti and rustic dances such as the Piedmontese Nizzarda. Through refined singing and richly textured continuo playing, the recording recreates the intimate yet vibrant soundscape that once accompanied courtly festivities, private devotion and garden entertainments in the Prague palaces of the early Baroque.
