Sacred Music in Slovakia from Sources of the 11th-17th Century presents a selection of sacred repertoire preserved in manuscripts and hymnals connected with the territory of present-day Slovakia. Spanning six centuries, the programme offers a unique survey of Gregorian chant, sacred song, and early polyphonic music documented in important medieval and early modern sources.
The recording brings together chants from the Bratislava Antiphonaries, the Košice Gradual, the Spiš Missal fragment, and other historical manuscripts with works by renowned Renaissance composers such as Thomas Stoltzer, Michael Praetorius, and David Thusius. The repertoire reflects both the international character of European liturgical traditions and the distinctive musical culture of the region.
Performed by the early music ensemble AD FONTES, the album combines scholarly research with historically informed performance practice. Several tracks are presented as premiere recordings, including a number of world premiere recordings, making this release an important contribution to the rediscovery of Slovakia's rich musical heritage.
