Magdaléna Bajuszová - piano
This double album presents a unique survey of Slovak piano sonatinas from the late nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Spanning more than 130 years, the programme traces the development of Slovak piano literature through works by leading composers of successive generations.
The collection opens with Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský and Ján Levoslav Bella, whose compositions reflect the late Romantic foundations of Slovak music. Further represented are Mikuláš Moyzes and his son Alexander Moyzes, whose collaborative Sonatina bridges two generations of Slovak musical culture. The programme continues with works by Dušan Martinček, Ilja Zeljenka and Jozef Malovec, composers who expanded the expressive and stylistic possibilities of Slovak piano music during the twentieth century.
The second disc features sonatinas by Ján Cikker, Eugen Suchoň, Ivan Hrušovský, Michal Vilec and Andrej Očenáš, composers whose individual musical languages range from lyricism and folklore-inspired idioms to modernist expression. The programme concludes with Béla Bartók's celebrated Sonatina, a work closely linked to the folk traditions of the Carpathian region and an important point of reference for Central European piano literature.
Performed by pianist Magdaléna Bajuszová, these recordings offer a comprehensive overview of a repertoire that remains largely unknown outside Slovakia while illustrating the richness and diversity of Slovak piano music.
