This live recording captures the concert of the Czech Philharmonic conducted by the Swiss maestro Hermann Scherchen at the Prague Spring Festival on 4 June 1951 in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House. Scherchen, one of the most distinctive conducting personalities of the 20th century, was renowned for his analytical clarity, precision and the ability to bring fresh energy to classical repertoire. The evening was devoted entirely to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The programme opens with a selection from the Serenade No. 12 in B-flat major, K.361, in which Scherchen demonstrates his sense for balance, colour and transparent phrasing. It is followed by the Serenata Notturna No. 6 in D major, K.239, whose unusual scoring and antiphonal dialogue between two string groups create a vivid and theatrical sound world. The concert concludes with the Symphony No. 29 in A major, K.201, one of Mozart’s finest early symphonies, interpreted by Scherchen with characteristic structural clarity, rhythmic vitality and expressive refinement.

This recording is a rare document of Scherchen’s collaboration with the Czech Philharmonic and an authentic testimony to the atmosphere of the Prague Spring Festival in the early 1950s. Even after many decades, the performance retains its immediacy, elegance and artistic integrity.

Tento živý záznam zachycuje koncert České filharmonie pod vedením švýcarského dirigenta Hermanna Scherchena na festivalu Pražské jaro dne 4. června 1951 v Obecním domě, ve Smetanově síni. Scherchen, jedna z nejvýraznějších dirigentských osobností 20. století, byl znám svou mimořádnou přesností, analytickým přístupem a schopností vdechnout klasickému repertoáru novou energii. Program večera byl věnován výhradně dílu Wolfganga Amadea Mozarta.

První skladbou koncertu je výběr ze Serenády č. 12 B dur KV 361, v níž Scherchen uplatňuje svůj cit pro proporce, dechovou barvu a jasnou artikulaci. Následuje Serenáda č. 6 D dur KV 239 „Serenata notturna“, jejíž neobvyklé obsazení a dialog dvou smyčcových skupin vytvářejí efektní zvukovou scénu. Závěrem večera je Symfonie č. 29 A dur KV 201, jedno z nejpozoruhodnějších orchestrálních děl Mozartova salcburského období, které Scherchen interpretuje s důrazem na průzračnost, energii a formální logiku.

Nahrávka představuje vzácný dokument Scherchenovy spolupráce s Českou filharmonií a zároveň autentické svědectví o festivalové atmosféře Pražského jara počátku padesátých let. Je to setkání velkého interpreta s orchestrem ve výjimečné formě – hudba, která i po desetiletích působí svou bezprostředností, noblesou a uměleckou pravdivostí.
